You know, when we talk about truly inspirational figures in British history, Queen Elizabeth II certainly stands out. Born on 21st April, 1926, she's had a remarkable life filled with moments that have defined her reign and endeared her to people worldwide till her passing on 8th September 2022. Let me take you on a journey through the life of Queen Elizabeth II, an icon of stability and grace.

Early Life and Ascension to the Throne

Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, as she was known in her early years, was born into the Duke and Duchess of York's family. She was born third in line to the throne. Despite the royal backdrop, she had a relatively normal and loving upbringing.

But her life took an unexpected turn in 1936 when her uncle, King Edward VIII, abdicated the throne, thrusting her father into the role of King George VI. This change in fortune meant that young Princess Elizabeth became the heir to the British throne. From an early age, she learned the duties and responsibilities of royalty, unknowingly preparing for the role that awaited her.

The Coronation

On 6th of February, 1952, the world watched in awe as Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II after her father's passing. The grandeur of her coronation on 2nd of June, 1953, at Westminster Abbey in London was a sight to behold. Dignitaries, leaders, and citizens from the far reaches of the Commonwealth came to witness this historic moment.

She celebrated her Silver Jubilee in 1977, her Gold Jubilee in 2002 (of which I remember dancing around a maypole for) She also reached her Diamond Jubilee in 2012 and finally her Platinum Jubilee in 2022 just before her passing in September.

A Reign of Transformation

Throughout her reign, Queen Elizabeth II had seen the world undergo monumental transformations. From the decline of the British Empire to the digital age, she's been a steadfast presence, providing the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth with stability and continuity.

Queen Elizabeth II has played a significant role in modernising the British monarchy and promoting female equality during her reign. Here are some key ways in which she has contributed to these changes:

1. Embracing Modern Communication: Queen Elizabeth has embraced modern communication methods to connect with her subjects. She was the first British monarch to send an email in 1976 and even sent her first tweet in 2014 to open the new Information Age exhibit at London's Science Museum. These actions demonstrated her willingness to use technology to engage with the public and adapt to the changing times.

2. Public Engagement and Transparency: Queen Elizabeth has made efforts to make the monarchy more transparent and relatable. She started the practice of the royal family's annual Christmas broadcast on television, which has become a cherished tradition for many. Her televised speeches during significant events, such as her annual Christmas addresses, have allowed the public to connect with her on a personal level. Her reassuring message during the Coronavirus pandemic was monumental and a show of absolute integretee. She helped millions of people feel reassured and also thanked the contribution of the NHS and all those on the front line.

3. Gender Equality in Succession: One of the most notable changes during Queen Elizabeth's reign was the amendment to the laws of succession to the British throne. The Succession to the Crown Act 2013 introduced gender equality in the line of succession. Prior to this, male heirs were given precedence over female heirs. The act removed this gender bias, ensuring that daughters have the same rights as sons to succeed to the throne. Girl Power!

4. Promoting Women's Rights: Queen Elizabeth II has used her position to promote women's rights and gender equality globally. She has met with and supported numerous women's organisations and leaders working to advance women's rights and empowerment.

5. Encouraging Female Leadership: The Queen has been a supporter of women in leadership roles, not only within the royal family but also in public life. She has met with and hosted countless female leaders, from heads of state to cultural figures, and has been a role model for women seeking to excel in various fields.

"When life seems hard, the courageous do not lie down and accept defeat; instead, they are all the more determined to struggle for a better future."

While Queen Elizabeth II may not have single-handedly driven all of these changes, her reign has undoubtedly coincided with a period of modernisation and increased gender equality within the British monarchy. Her personal commitment to these causes and her ability to adapt the monarchy to the changing times have contributed to a more progressive and inclusive institution. She has set an example for future generations and continues to inspire both in the United Kingdom and worldwide.

Legacy and Impact

Queen Elizabeth II's reign is a chapter in British history that's truly awe-inspiring. Her unwavering commitment to her role, her ability to adapt to a changing world, and her enduring dedication to her people have made her one of the most respected and beloved monarchs of all time. She remains a symbol of continuity in a rapidly evolving world, a testament to the strength and resilience of a remarkable woman who's been an integral part of the modern history of the British monarchy.

It's a story that's not just inspirational; it's a living testament to the power of dedication, grace, and a commitment to duty. Queen Elizabeth II has shown us all the true meaning of leadership, and she continues to inspire us with her unwavering resolve.

A Letter to:

To Queen Elizabeth II,

Thank you for showing the world that Girls Can run the world! Growing up with a female monarch has been hugely inspiring to me. Leading by example and normalising women in power has shown the world that Women can achieve the top roles in society. I'm not massively interested in royalty but your impact on changing the way people view women is truly inspirational. I don't think we would have seen such a development of female right and equality without you.

Your integrity and dedication shows us all the women can do anything.
